Crisis Intervention Strategies

Prevention and management of crisis in the workplaces or at home is a complex process that requires ethical and legal considerations when addressing various issues. In case study, suffering from depression, Julie is an eighth grade student at South Middle School and she has developed suicidal feelings.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Crisis Intervention Strategies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More At school, Julie is angry and outbursts during math class, which prompts her teacher to refer her to school psychologist, Dr. Lee for examination. Critical examination by Dr. Lee shows that Julie has been suffering from depression in silence from bullying. Other girls in the school have been bullying Julie because she is overweight and obese, making her to stay in isolation and depression. Further probing by Dr. Lee reveals that Julie is nurturing suicidal feelings and is contemplating suicide. Julie confesses that she d oes not only want to commit suicide, but also kill one or two of the girls who have been bullying her as revenge. Even though Dr. Lee counsels and convinces her to sign a contract that shows that she will not commit suicide, she declines. In the light of this knowledge, what are the ethical and legal considerations that surround the case study, and appropriate intervention strategies? The case of Julie has ethical considerations since Dr. Lee is in an ethical dilemma on how to address the issue of depression and suicidal attitude. Julie has confessed that she is going to kill her friends and commit suicide, yet she has declined to sign a contract to indicate that she has recanted avenging and committing suicide. Dr. Lee is in dilemma whether to compel her to sign the contract so that she might change her mind or leave her to go but in fear that she may avenge and commit suicide. Bernard (2009) argues that, it is unethical for employees, family care providers, and volunteers to misha ndle or maltreat a person who is receiving certain services through their actions or inactions (p.4).Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Moreover, it is ethical for Dr. Lee to keep Julie’s information regarding suicide and revenge confidentially to avoid unnecessary commotion in the school. The case study also has legal perspective because Dr. Lee is dealing with a medical issue as well as a crime issue. In medical aspect, Dr. Lee is responsible for counseling Julie by taking her through the appropriate psychotherapy procedures to enable her cope with the depression and alleviate suicidal feelings in her. In legal aspect, Dr. Lee is struggling to ensure that Julie certifies by signing that she will not avenge or commit suicide lest he is accused for negl igence when Julie decides to go ahead with her mission. Holzgrefe and Keohane (2003) argue that, legal intervention of issues is comprehensive and effective because it leaves both the perpetrator and the victim satisfied no matter the outcome of resolutions since justice prevails (p.56). In this instance, Dr. Lee is in dilemma whether to undertake legal intervention or not, because Julie has declined to sign a contract to demonstrate that she is no longer going to avenge and commit suicide. Given that overweight and obesity coupled with bullying experiences predispose Julie to depression and subsequent suicidal feelings, it is imperative that interventions strategies target school environment. With this information, as a crisis worker, I would recommend students to receive counseling concerning bullying and stress management so that they can cope with distressing circumstances.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Crisis Intervention Strategies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Brown (2005) argues that, if depression is a predisposing factor to development of suicidal behaviors, treatment of depression will effectively prevent recurrence of the suicidal feelings (p.8). Moreover, it is ethical to notify the school administration about Julie’s condition to put up appropriate measures to mitigate bullying in school. Legally, since Julie declines to sign a contract showing that she has recanted avenging and committing suicide, it is appropriate to undertake legal interventions by notifying police so that incase there is a crisis, no one will carry blame for negligence. Understanging the Parallel Structure of English

Understanging the Parallel Structure of English One of the most common writing mistakes in more advanced English learners writing is parallel structure. Parallel structure refers to structures which are repeated because they are connected by words such as: and, but, and or. These connecting words are referred to as coordinating conjunctions. Here are a few examples of correct parallel structure. Tom enjoys taking hikes, riding his bicycle and paragliding in his free time.I went home, took a shower, changed my clothes and ate some lunch. Here are the same two sentences using incorrect parallel structure: Tom enjoys taking hikes, to ride his bicycle and paraglide in his free time.I went home, take a shower, change my clothes and eat some lunch. In both cases, there is a mistake in parallel structure. Notice how the verb forms in the correct version of the two sentences use the same verb form. In the incorrect version of the sentences, the verb forms are varied. Parallel structure refers to the same structure repeating throughout a sentence. In other words, if the gerund form (ing form) of a verb is used after one verb, all the listed verbs also take the gerund form. Remember:  If you are listing verbs after the main verb, keep the verbs in the same form. (verb infinitive, verb gerund) He hopes to play, eat and get some rest. She enjoys listening to music, reading novels and playing tennis. He would like to have some lunch, study and then play the piano. If you are conjugating a number of verbs to relate a story for the same subject, use the same tense. We went to church, bought some lunch, came home, ate and took a nap. There are also other types of parallel structure mistakes. Which two types of mistakes in the parallel structure do you think are made in these sentences? Bob drove carelessly, quickly and in a reckless manner.Peter mentioned that he wanted to go home, that he needed a shower, and go to sleep. ... and the correct versions of the sentences: Bob drove carelessly, quickly and recklessly.Peter mentioned that he wanted to  go home, that he needed a shower, and wanted to go to sleep. In the first sentence, adverbs are being used in a list and should continue, rather than injecting an adjective. carelessly, quickly, recklessly, ruthlessly, etc. RATHER THAN carelessly, quickly, and in a reckless (adjective) manner. In the second sentence, the dependent clauses are used that he wanted to go home... that he needed a shower, etc. and should continue in the same manner. Notice also that the verb used in the third clause of this string of clauses is in the present tense, rather than the past as the other clauses. Here is another example of a similar adjective mistake in parallel structure. Which adjective is incorrect? Why? Jennifer appears to be tired, distracted and upsetting. If you answered upsetting, you are correct. The first two adjectives tired and distracted refer to the state that affects Jennifer. In other words, she feels tired and distracted. Upsetting refers to the effect that she has on someone else. Jennifer is upsetting to Jim. In this case, the intent is that Jennifer appears tired, distracted AND upset. All three adjectives refer to how she feels, rather than the effect she has on someone else. Double-Check for Mistakes in Parallel Structure A good way to check for mistakes in the parallel structure is to look for anything you list using commas  and make sure the list of equal elements are all in the same form. Parallel Structure Exercise Identify and correct the mistakes in a parallel structure in the following sentences.   Alex decided to get up early, go jogging, eat a healthy breakfast and got ready for school.I wish he would listen to his father, take his advice, and applied for a job.James stopped smoking, drinking and to eat too much.Jason invited Tim, her, they and Peter to the wedding. He is an articulate, thoughtful, and meaningfully speaker.Alexander did her homework, cleaned her room, but doesnt play the piano. The politicians hope to clean up, and modernizing this city.Eating healthy food, drinking lots of water and get exercise improves your quality of life. The teachers had graded the tests, completed the reports and meeting with parents before they went on summer vacation.Sheila misses seeing Tom, going on long walks with her friends, and played football. Americans versus the Spanish Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Americans versus the Spanish Culture - Essay Example Pietri managed to illustrate the actual state of the cultural rivalry and the differences between the American and the Spanish communities in America. The poem clearly showed the differences, mostly due to his decision to use a number of issues such as differences in language, skin colour, and economic differences. Culturally, people of the Spanish community were considered slaves of the Americans and were supposed to work in their fields, industries and homes, ultimately dying with the poverty they came with to the country. The poem explored their deplorable conditions, their lack of ambition and their high level of suffering. Pedro Pietri revealed that hardly could the Spanish escape poverty that ravaged their masses. Instead, they died in hope for a better life, like owning some form of property, for example, a piece of land or a house. In their efforts to impress their bosses, they frequently died. He sympathized with them, for he never saw a possible end to the problems in the f oreseeable future. The scolding and demeanour of the race is evident, with the writer noting that some workers wished death would befall their supervisors so that they could get a pay rise. He actually sympathized with the troubled race of the Spanish and their hopeless condition. (Pietri 1-11). Rodriguez (7) gave his reasons for believing in the existence of cultural differences between the Americans and the Spanish. However, he did not vividly highlight the effects of this difference, just like Pedro Pietri did. His is a story of his

Critical analysis of five articles related to finance Essay

Critical analysis of five articles related to finance - Essay Example The inflation in Asia, corresponding to the worldwide phenomenon, is also surmounting. This is evident, in the rise of fuel prices and other infrastructural bottlenecks. In fact, the inflation in India has touched 11.91% already! Due to this, international projects and other internal economic activity, have been affected. In my opinion, inflationary tendencies are often high in the Asian continent. The continent particularly comprises Developing economies. These economies are often at the mercy of the developed world and their dominance in the international arena. Due to this, when the OPEC countries have benefitted from the rise in fuel prices, the Asian continent seems to be worst hit. However, with countries in the G-8 Summit talking about alternative sources of energy. Due to this, the inflation has lowered slightly! The second article is on Presidential candidate, Barack Obama's speech. The article talks about Obama's visit to Europe. He has asked the European countries to share the burden of the United States. This, he urged, was in an attempt to countering a threat to world peace-Terrorism. This was to urge greater military support and to garner all forces to fight against the menace. Terrorism is especially prevalent in Afghanistan and other places.

Impact of modern Western social Evolutionism Essay

Impact of modern Western social Evolutionism - Essay Example Even after Buddhism stopped to be the key religion of India, there was prolonged influence of development of material culture in china. Majority of the Buddhist scriptures and philosophers eliminated the existence with great enthusiasm and anxiety. The believers embraced the existing objects and doctrines as a way of expressing their religious beliefs. Majority of the Chinese in the communities tended to reject the roles which seemed to be indifferent (Morreall, John, and Tamara 32). Buddhism was preferable as it was antithetical to Daoism, which was the main religion in China. The major difference was the fact that Daoism started and inculcated harmony while Buddhism was aimed at mastering the internal world. The Chinese aspect was diverse from the religion of the Central Asian travelers and their religions. Concepts such as monasticism and personal spiritual enlighten directly contradicted the Confucian ethics that governed the family and emperors. The Chinese officials questioned how the monk’s personal attainment benefited the empire at whole. Buddhism has transformed into a system that exists and is advantageous among the Chinese way of life. Hence, the Indian sutras have managed to advocate for the filial piety which makes up the main text of china’s monarchial system (Morreall, John, and Tamara 41).... The Red River Delta was used as efficient impede due to the successful trade of the Chinese millennium. There were numerous goods and ideas that were brought by the Vietnamese. Buddhism was brought from India, and during most of the periods a lot of people embraced Buddhism and adopted the indigenous religions and world values. As the Red River Delta thrived, the population began to grow southwards towards the narrow coastal regions (Morreall, John, and Tamara 46). The Vietnamese settlers flooded into the untilled lands and turned them into rice plantations. The inability of ruling the Le dynasty or deal with other predicaments resulted to the partitioning of the country by nobility in the sixteenth century. The Chinese constructed roads and harbors where the government derived their revenue through the public works project to facilitate the administration of new territories. Agriculture was enhanced through the advancement of irrigation methods and the use of plough and animals, the se innovations had been noticed among the Vietnamese who had practiced in a lower scale. When new lands were initiated for agriculture, majority of the Chinese settlers eventually intermarried with the Vietnamese and together they formed and settled on their homeland. During the first and second centuries, there was the rise of the Han Viet class that conveyed large portions of rice plantations (Morreall, John, and Tamara 51). The Vietnamese had settled in China and adopted their society and languages. The Chinese vocabulary and practical words were used in their new generation and culture. Questionnaire conducted in order to understand the consumer preference on watching movies [Appendix 1] For the purpose of this report a short questionnaire was carried in order to identify the consumer preference in modes of entertainment with regard to movies. Word Count: 663 2.0 Task 02 Discussion Paper 2.1 Abstract The purpose of the following discussion paper is to understand the new technological advancements in the movie industry and its impact on consumer behaviour. To support the purpose of this report, both primary and secondary data has been taken into consideration. After a literature review of the available resources, the drastic changes on consumer behaviour were examined. It was determined that digital technologies have influenced the consumers to have a preference on home movies over cinemas. 2.2 Introduction Over the years, innovation of new technology has taken a new turn and has caused a major impact on life styles and behaviour of consumers. The history of the movie industry goes way back to 1896, where Thomas A. Edison and Thomas Armat presented the first motion picture on a public screen in the United States of America. [9] There onwards, it has evolved from nickelodeons to videocassettes, DVDs and now to various online movie streams. Popular online DVD and Blu-ray  [1]  disc rental services such as Netflix, which also offers services such as movie downloading facilities through devices such as Wii, PS3 X-box, has cultivated a major influence on consumer behaviour complementing the busy schedules of each individual. [10] Due to high digital accessibility, most consumers have many options on browsing the Internet to choose their favourite movies. In addition, the current economic situations have increased the cost sensitivity of the consumers. The demand for digital content consumption by consumers will be hoisted in the near future that will cause in launching new technological devices. [11] The aim of the following discussion paper is to further understand the rising trend of online movie streaming and rentals in the movie industry and its impact on consumer behaviour. A discussion of this nature will benefit the movie industry in understanding the nature of the impact on consumer behaviour due to online movie streaming. 2.3 Research Hypothesis The emerging theme of online movie streaming and rentals in collaboration with high tech devices will make a significant impact on consumer behaviour. In order to prove the above statement a secondary research was undertaken in the form of a literature review through an industry analysis, the impact on the MESO factor, consumer behaviour, analysis of the key players in the online movie industry etc. 2.4 Limitations of the study The primary research carried out mostly limited to Sri Lankan consumers (i.e interviews, questionnaire). The sampling was limited to a certain number and the secondary research was mostly based on statistics available in U.S.A. 3.0 The Emerging MACRO Theme Online Movie Streaming Rentals In an era of digital advancements, it is not difficult to define the emerging theme of Online Movie Streaming and Rentals. Currently, there are hundreds of websites widely available to consumers to download and stream movies at a lesser cost, making it a popular among consumers in most parts of the world. Technologies such as Placeshifting, which allows anyone with a broadband Internet connection to have video streams from their home television set or personal video recorder (PVR) forwarded for viewing at any location where they have a computer display and a high-speed Internet connection, [12] is a major benefit to people with busy schedules outside home. These have caused a massive impact on the movie industry, which has created a lot of competition among DVD rental companies and as well as movie theatres. [13] According to the report Online Movies: A Global Strategic Business report presented by Global Industry Analysts, the world online movie market is expected to grow up to $ 4.44 billions by 2017. The rapid increase of movie downloads through the Internet is a result of wide availability and introduction in more advanced broadband facilities with computers consisting of hard drives with a larger capacity. Furthermore, key players in the market such as Apple and Netflix have introduced Internet ready set-top boxes, providing the ability for the consumers to download the preferred movies or television shows to their personal home theatres. [11] 3.1 Key Players The growing trend in the online movie industry has created a considerable number of players in the market. The following analysis is based on the key players that are currently competing among each other. Netflix The movie renting was taken to a new level when Netflix introduced their home delivery service to the customers, which created a competitive advantage over many other movie rental services. Thereafter, Netflix introduced the option of accessing unlimited video streaming online to the customers without having to rent DVDs. [6] They also have signed a $ 1 billion deal with Paramount Pictures, MGM and Lions Gate for their content to be added to the services. [6] Netflix recently announced they would be reducing the number of DVDs mailed out than the year before, as there was an 86% increase in the quarterly profits of online movie streaming. [6] But the company also stated that there is a possibility of a substantial increase in the license cost of content to its streaming services by the second quarter. [7] VUDU VUDU is a service where recent movies are supplied on demand without a monthly subscription or contract. [19] The consumers only have to pay a fee of US$ 2/- per movie rented for 02 nights. According to Pogue, 2010 it is a set top box that connects to the Internet, which provides a vast range movies that arrives on the same day the movies come out on DVDs. [8] They recently developed their system by collaborating with other companies such as LG, Samsung and Mitsubishi, where the same service is built into the TVs and Blu-Ray players. [8] Redbox This is a movie rental service available in the form of kiosks all over the United States. There are over 27,000 kiosks located nationwide in most convenient places for consumers such as grocery stores and convenience shops. Consumers are able to reserve movies online or through the Redbox i-phone application, making it possible to rent on the run. [14] You Tube A recent announcement made by You Tube stating that they will be expanding their online streaming movie rental service by adding 3000 movies in agreement with Universal Studios, Sony and Warner Brothers for their movies to be rented on site. [5] 4.0 Impact on the MESO factor Consumer Behaviour In order to understand the impact on consumer behaviour in relation to the topic, it is important to derive it as a concept. According to Schiffman et al, 2001, [15]consumer behaviour is defined as how consumers act in the processes of seeking, purchasing, using, evaluating and disposing products and services that they expect to result in their satisfaction and personal needs. According to the interview held with Mr. Bennett Rathnayake, he stated that there is a clear decrease in the number of people attending cinemas in Sri Lanka over the last 10 years. [a] He stated that online movie streaming has become more popular among the younger generation and most viewers are quite comfortable with watching the latest releases online or on DVD rather than in the cinema. However, he also stated that this is also affected by the time taken for a movie to be shown in Sri Lankan cinemas compared to the time of the worldwide releases. The impact on consumer behaviour by online movie streaming and rentals can be explained through the concept Diffusion of Innovation, which is the process by which the acceptance of an innovation over a period of time is spread by communication to members of a social system. [16] Not all new products or services have the potential to be accepted by consumers. However, the online movie streaming and rental market has managed to capture a large audience through the following characteristics that have an influence on the consumer acceptance of new products. 4.1 Relative Advantage This is the degree to which potential consumers perceive a new product as superior to existing substitutes. Consumers have come a long way from going to a movie theatre on a Saturday night with friends to merely renting out a movie from Blockbuster and watching it right at home. The present has become even more advanced that they do not even have to go out to rent a movie but get the DVD delivered to their doorstep. This type of convenient methods were as previously discussed, was made possible by billion dollar companies such as Netflix where renting a movie is just one click away. Most consumers prefer convenience, which reduces the time factor in making purchasing decisions. For instance, the movies those are available for rental will be displayed online in contrast to a scenario where the consumers have to be disappointed when the required DVD is not available in a movie rental store or a kiosk. Also, all these Internet services are easily accessible in terms of feasibility. 4.2 Compatibility This is the degree to which potential consumers feel a new product is consistent with their present needs, values and practices. Most consumers are highly literate in technologically advanced devices, which has led into a drastic change in the life styles and values practiced by them. They constantly make use of on demand amenities such as instant downloading and streaming videos on their personal mobiles, i-phones, i-pads, blackberrys etc. that conveniently satisfies their needs. 4.3 Complexity This is the degree to which a new product is difficult to understand or use affects product acceptance. According to Internet usage statistics, the number of Internet users in the world has grown by 444.8 % from the year 2000 to 2010. [16] This could be a clear indication of the consumers evolving from a manual to a digital era, which has made them well informed and updated on new technologies. Most online movie streaming and rental websites are less complex and easily interpreted by consumers that has made them accept it in a short time span. 4.5 Trialabilty This is the degree to which a new product is capable of being tried on a limited basis. There are many online renting and streaming options available for the clients. For instance, the consumers are able to compare the speed of which a movie or a video can be streamed online, among more than one competitor in the market. According to Pouge, 2010 [8], videos provided by Vudu are much clear than those of Netflix. However, these views can be differed from consumer perceptions and loyalty towards each individuals preferences. 4.6 Observabilty This is the degree to which a products benefits or attributes can be observed, imagined, or described to potential consumers. Due to the high usage of Internet advertising, the visibility of online movie streaming and rental services are very much high and easily diffused to the consumers. In addition to the above factors, the consumers are also cost conscious with regard to entertainment. Affordability plays a major role in most consumers lives as the cost of living has taken a high rise especially after the recent recession condition that affected most parts of the world. Most consumers sought alternatives for entrainment and adopted to low cost or in some cases free services such as streaming and renting movies online. 5.0 Findings Discussion According to Theatrical Statistics, although the U.S. / Canada box office releases have increased by 15% in 2010 over the past 5 years, the movie admissions or tickets sold have declined by 5% compared to 2008 level. [4] In contrast to the above research findings, one may argue that the excitement of attending a movie theatre and experiencing it on a wide screen with a surround sound system cannot be compared to the same on a home movie entertainment system. Although most cinemas are struggling to attract more moviegoers, new technologies such as 3D movies have attracted a considerable amount of consumers. At least one 3D movie was viewed by more than one in three people in the U.S. / Canada in 2010. [4] However, 3D viewing is highly correlated by demographic categories where it is more popular among the youngsters when compared to the age category of over 40 years. [4] According to the survey carried out 82% of the participants stated that they download movies most of the time where 7% stated that they watch movies at movie theatres. They were also asked to give out reasons as to why they prefer each mode to the other, and 69% of the participants responded stating that the frequency of movie released in Sri Lanka are low and by the time they are released the movies are already out on DVD or available online. [Appendix 1] However, these data is only limited to a few number of participants and is intricate to limit to a certain demographical sector. There are also downfalls to the high frequency of consumers streaming movies online. For instance, unnecessary harmful bugs and viruses can be transmitted through unsecured websites and request for personal financial information of the consumers resulting in installing malware on users computers. [3] It is often encountered that cybercrooks advertise on-demand movies where the users are asked to download anti-virus security software that that helps users to download movies automatically without the consent of the user thus resulting in movie fans to be exposed to unauthorised and illegal content as well as malvertising  [2]  and malicious code downloaded with streamed movies. [3] 6.0 Recommendations Strategic Response to Changes in the Movie Industry The digital advancements have made changes in the industry in many means mainly creating a competitive environment among movie rental companies. Most companies such as Blockbuster movie rentals and movie theatres have gone out of business as Internet has cultivated a change in consumer behaviour. As a result of online rental facilities, consumers do not have to worry about renting out a movie from a store and returning it the next morning to avoid late fee charges. However, in response, AMC theatres recently announced that they would be updating the MovieWatcher rewards program by replacing it in response to the frequent requests by audience for richer rewards. [1] This is an attempt to attract more moviegoers to theatres in an environment of films being widely available through the Internet and videos-on-demand. It is recommended for the marketers within the industry to follow these types of methods in order to retain the moviegoer audience and increase the frequency in terms of cinema attendance. More serious concerns have raised such as copyright issues and during the interview carried out with Mr. Thissa Nagodavithana stated that, although he is in possession of the copyrights of old Sinhala movie broadcasting, most websites that stream videos online illegally uploads pirated copies making it difficult to preserve copyrights to them. [b] [3] As a strategic response, it can be recommended for the marketers in the industry to keep up with the new technologies and introduce new products and market launches in order to adapt to these changes taken place in the movie industry. Furthermore, it has been brought into notice that there is a major cost reduction in using digital technologies in movie making rather than putting them up in film, which is cheaper to shoot, cut and duplicate. [2] This could be a major advantage for cinema owner where piracy has become a huge problem in making profits. 7.0 Conclusion Online movie streaming and rental trend has caused drastic changes in the movie industry as well as a major impact on consumer behaviour. A lot of competition among key players in the online market had risen making companies such as Blockbuster and cinemas go out of business. For the survival of the industry strategic responses should be carried out through adapting to new technologies and introducing new launches. Marketing professionals attached to the industry should adapt to these changes by improving their skills, attitudes and behaviour and cater to their audience accordingly. Journal Reading :: essays research papers

Introduction: Journaling is a powerful thing; there are many different uses for a Journal, everything from personal thoughts to keeping an expedition written down for later resource. Many people don’t use Journals which is unfortunate, my focus in this paper is to show the different areas of Journaling and to possibly make it a part of your life. Thesis: My thesis statement is to show the importance of journaling in leadership and other positions.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Getting started, it doesn’t take much to get started, all you need is a pen or pencil, preferably a pencil incase you need to change something, but a wise teacher once told me that his mom asked him a very interesting question, â€Å" What do you use on crossword puzzles, a pen or a pencil,† she then later stated â€Å" I always do mine in pen,† now the reason behind her always doing it in pen is so you know you did it write the first time, and you feel confident in that. The next thing you would or should need is something to write on, this can be anything from a purchased store journal to napkin from a restaurant, although having a booklet of napkins may seem absurd, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s something to take your thoughts down on. The other thing that you should have is a positive attitude, trust me it is helpful in all aspects of life, a great man once said, â€Å" The greatest discovery of my generation is that hum an being can alter their lives by altering their attitude of mind by William James.† (Pg.88 John Maxwell The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a leader). That’s about all it should take to start a effective journal, so stay focused as we will be going through the Purpose of Journaling. The first area I would like to delve into is the thinking aspect of Journaling. I don’t know about you, but I like to think, it makes me feel like I’m the smartest man in the world. I took this class called Practicum Seminar Leadership and for the class we had to go on a solo trip for about 3 days, by ourselves, and I thought a lot while I was out there and I wish I had, had a journal to keep all my thoughts down in, because some of them were lost, but I came out of there with a deep understanding of what it means to be positive.

Globe Theatre Essay

We do not know much about Shakespeare’s life. He comes from the small provincial town Stratford that lies on the Avon. His father was a workman, and he was a member of the town council; and he was also the mayor of the town for three years. Shakespeare most likely went to Stratford Grammar School, which can still be seen in the town, however we do not know much about what he learned in school. In 1582, when he was 18 years old, he married Ann Hathaway who was 7-8 years older; she was the oldest daughter of a wealthy farmer. Their first child was born the year after, only six months after the wedding; later they also had twins. There are several explanations as to why Shakespeare traveled to London, but most explanations are anecdotes from recent times. Some researchers believe that he became a member of a theatrical company that was visiting Stratford. The first time we here about him again is in 1592, and at that time he is a well-known person in London. He is mostly known as an actor and as a playwright, but he was also the owner of The Globe Theatre. Shakespeare wrote 37 plays: comedies, tragedies and historical dramas. His plays have something to fit everyone’s tastes; there are exciting plots, strong emotions, colors and comedy. Shakespeare’s themes are love, nature, power and the responsibilities that come with it. The central theme is humans and, especially after 1600, the bitterness towards the humans is most definitely felt. Around 1611 he returned to Stratford, possibly the same year as he wrote The Tempest, which can be read as his goodbye to the theater. He lived his last years in his home town, and died in 1616. He is buried in the Church of the Holy Trinity, and above his grave on the left side of the church, lies his epitaph.

Free Essays on Dowry System

DOWRY SYSTEM In today’s society our beliefs are different than they were during the Elizabethan era. Today, people believe that we live in golden ages and were better of now than we ever were. There are many facts that could prove that belief wrong. Take for example the dowry system. It was designed to provide the newly weds with security and basic needs. Today’s society and especially western one would say that this system was cold and demeaning to women. I think that there is nothing cold and demeaning about it, and I also know plenty of people who wished they had dowry system before they got married. One of those people is my wife which I completely agree with since I know what we went thru. Not only were we living in a foreign country but also we were broke and our parents didn’t support us. On top of all that we wanted to get married with nothing else but love. Oh how I wish we had some kind of dowry system, how many problems would have been solved and how much time would have been saved. But hey everyone deserves a lesson in life and we learned ours. Love is not enough to get married on. Love has to be a part of something bigger to work otherwise that love will end. That’s why I think that we as society should create some kind of dowry system in order to make our marriages work. We need something that will end the divorce and secure the relationships. I propose that we make a mandatory law that says all people regardless of sex, race, or religion have to open a special account at age 14 and the account has to be open for at least 4 years. During those 4 years the state must take out 5 % of your paycheck either yours or your parents/guardian regardless of what kind of income it is. You can’t touch the money until you’re married and no special circumstances or special treatment for anyone, and if neither you nor your parents have any income you shouldn’t marry until you do. The eNotes Blog And the Nobel GoesTo

And the Nobel GoesTo The Nobel Committee  has announced its pick for the 2014 Nobel Prize for Literature, and the winner is Patrick Modiano. Not familiar with the French novelist? Youre not alone; Modianos celebrity is far more modest than that of fellow candidate Haruki Murakami, as well as last years winner, Alice Munro. Yet he is referred to by the Swedish Academy as the Marcel Proust of our time. Modianos life began at the end of the darkest time in modern European history, and it is to that his writing always returns. He was born in 1945 to a Jewish French father, Albert Modiano, and a Belgian mother,  Louisa Colpijn, an actress.  The two met  in Nazi-occupied Paris, during which time Albert engaged in some shady dealings. Throughout Modianos childhood his father was a mostly absent figure, and the young Patrick  learned most of what he knew  about Albert from the troubling stories of the occupation years passed down to him. Modiano admits its because of this history that his novels focus on the shameful period of the Occupation: After each novel, I have the impression that I have cleared it all away  But I know Ill come back over and over again to tiny details, little things that are part of what I am. In the end, we are all determined by the place and the time in which we were born. From this history Modiano has crafted more than forty works, the most famous of which is 1968s La Place de lEtoile, a key post-Holocaust work. His novels predominately share the theme of predestination how we are determined by the traces of our past and the loss of identity. Peter Englund of the Swedish Academy said that one of the most important questions Modianos works ask is, How will I break out of the weight of time? In its announcement of the award, the Nobel Committee also remarked on Modianos  art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation. Though the win was unexpected (only three days prior the odds were in favor of three other candidates), clearly the dark horse Modiano is an author Anglo-American readers should begin to take notice of, if only to hear the petite musique of his prose firsthand its haunting little music. Terrorism Waves In America Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words

Terrorism Waves In America - Research Paper Example This study is structured around the hypothesis that terrorism in the US lacks particular/substantive definition due to evolutionary forces experienced under different waves. The definition of terrorism is therefore multifaceted according to the various waves experienced. Terror is a deep-rooted phenomenon in the modern world. Though having begun in the late nineteenth century in Russia, the modern terror has evolved to cover the whole world, with the US such a hard hit victim. The simplest definition of a wave is an activity cycle per a given period characterized by phases of contractions as well as expansions. According to the report, each wave as described had a particular predominant defining feature, which also would explain the naming. This paper makes a conclusion that , terrorism is the use of force unlawfully against a person or property with a motive of intimidating and or coercing a sovereign government, the population of civilians or such a segment guided by an objective of political as well as social gain. This definition serves as the basis of the paper with the understanding that it is not wholly universally accepted but that it has common features that are ascribed to terror activities in general. Terrorism activities in the United States have nevertheless been very dynamic and this explains the evolution of the definitions accorded to terrorism in the states. The terrorism waves are ‘anarchist wave,’ ‘anti colonial wave,’ ‘new left wave’ as well as ‘religious wave’.

The dissapointment by behn's Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The dissapointment by behn's - Essay Example The writer had approached the 17th century contemporary literary as well as socio-political aspects that were predominant in the restoration world of art and literature. Behn’s treatment of the 17th century discourse of sexuality and morality In the poem Behn took up the topic of the battle of the sexes that was one of the most prevalent topics in restoration literature. Her poem began with the typical act of the male pursuing the female in the game of love. She apparently glorified masculine strength over feminine coyness as the power that initiated the act of love. By describing Lysander as one who made sexual advances to a lady because he was â€Å"By an impatient passion swayed† (I.1), Behn not only pointed out the vain male ego but the crudity of the situation. As a contrast to Lysander’s rakish character Behn created Cloris as the conventional figure of ‘virgin innocence’ who was apparently trying to ward off his charms. But her resistance to L ysander’s approaches as she â€Å"Permits his force, yet gently strove† (II.14) indicated Cloris’ indulgence.
